1 SAMUEL: CHAPTER 31

Chapter 31 details the tragic conclusion of King Saul's reign and his life. It describes the final battle between the Israelites and the Philistines on Mount Gilboa, where Israel suffers a devastating defeat. Saul and his three sons, including Jonathan, are overwhelmed by the enemy. To avoid capture and humiliation by the Philistines, Saul takes his own life. His armour-bearer also dies by his side. The Philistines desecrate the bodies of Saul and his sons, displaying them publicly. However, brave men from Jabesh-Gilead undertake a dangerous night mission to retrieve the bodies, giving them a proper and respectful burial, thus ending the first era of kingship in Israel.
