PSALMS: CHAPTER 135

Psalm 135 is a sweeping, celebratory hymn of praise summoning the servants of the Lord who stand in His house to magnify His goodness and pleasant name. It recounts God’s sovereignty in creation—bringing vapor from the ends of the earth, making lightning for the rain, and releasing wind from His treasuries—and His mighty acts in history, delivering Israel from Egypt and defeating powerful kings to give His people their inheritance. The psalm contrasts the living, active Lord with lifeless idols made of silver and gold, which have mouths that cannot speak, eyes that cannot see, and no breath in their bodies, warning that those who make them become just as lifeless. The psalm concludes with joyful blessings on the Lord out of Zion, urging us to worship the living God who alone is worthy.
