PSALMS: CHAPTER 40

Psalm 40 is a celebrated song of deliverance and total surrender, moving from grateful thanksgiving to urgent petition. David recounts how he waited patiently for the Lord, who inclined His ear, brought him up out of a horrible pit and miry clay, set his feet upon a rock, and put a new song of praise in his mouth. David realises that God does not take ultimate delight in animal sacrifices and legalistic rituals, but in a heart that joyfully delights to do His will, prophetically pointing to Christ's perfect offering of Himself. Even as new troubles surround him, David finds refuge in God's thoughts of loving-kindness, declaring, 'I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me.' This psalm encourages anyone feeling trapped in hopelessness to wait upon God, knowing that divine deliverance produces a song of joyful obedience.
