JUDGES: CHAPTER 16

Chapter 16 tells the dramatic final story of Samson, the strong judge of Israel. It begins with Samson visiting the Philistine city of Gaza, where he uses his incredible strength to escape their trap by ripping out the city gates and carrying them far away. Later, he falls in love with a woman named Delilah. The Philistine leaders bribe Delilah with a huge amount of money to discover the secret behind Samson's power so they can capture him. Delilah pressures Samson repeatedly, and he tells her three false secrets, each time breaking free. Finally, worn down by her constant nagging, Samson reveals the true source of his strength: his uncut hair, a sign of his special vow to God since birth. Delilah betrays him, cuts his hair while he sleeps, and his strength leaves him. The Philistines then capture him, blind him, and force him to work in their prison. However, Samson's hair slowly begins to grow back. The Philistine rulers gather for a great celebration, thanking their god Dagon for Samson's capture. They bring the blinded Samson out to entertain them. Samson prays to God for one last burst of strength and, leaning against the main pillars of the temple, collapses the entire building, killing himself and more Philistine leaders than he had in his entire lifetime.
