JOSHUA: CHAPTER 8

This chapter details Israel's second, successful attempt to conquer the city of Ai, following their previous defeat. God instructs Joshua not to be afraid and reveals a strategic plan involving a deceptive retreat and a hidden ambush. Joshua carefully selects his forces, setting a large group in ambush behind Ai. The main Israelite army then approaches Ai, drawing the city's defenders out by pretending to flee into the wilderness. As the men of Ai, along with those from nearby Bethel, pursue the retreating Israelites, the hidden ambush force quickly takes the undefended city and sets it on fire. Seeing the smoke, the pursuing men of Ai realise their trap, caught between the returning Israelites and the forces emerging from their now-captured city. Israel utterly destroys the inhabitants of Ai, including its king, and takes all the plunder and livestock as God had commanded. After the victory, Joshua builds an altar on Mount Ebal, as Moses had instructed, and publicly renews the covenant by reading the entire Law of Moses, including its blessings and curses, to all the people of Israel, including women, children, and foreigners.
